The active ingredient is podophyllotoxin, which prevents warts from growing or dividing. How do you know if you have genital warts?
Genital warts are caused by an infection of HPV, the human papillomavirus. Warts are small growths that appear around the penis, vagina or anus. They are most commonly spread during vaginal or anal sex, but can also be transmitted through non-penetrative contact. How does Condyline work?
Condyline is a clear topical solution containing podophyllotoxin. When applied to warts, podophyllotoxin enters the nuclei of the infected cells. It targets the cells’ ability to divide and multiply, which prevents warts from growing. When the existing wart cells die off, they are replaced by healthy skin cells. Side effects are rare, but may include a burning/tingling sensation on application, and sometimes pain or redness in the affected area.
How long does it take to see results?
You should be able to see some difference in your warts after the first-week treatment cycle, and smaller warts should disappear completely after about four weeks. Warts may turn white before disappearing. Condyline should only be used as an external treatment – do not apply it to any soft mucous membrane tissue such as the anus or vagina. Follow the instructions provided.
Condyline cannot completely treat HPV. However, the body tends to rid itself of the infection on its own over time. Certain strains of HPV can eventually lead to cancer, but this is different from the strain that causes genital warts. Warts can still be transmitted while using Condyline, so take precautions such as using protection and washing shared sex toys between use.
Condyline alternatives
The only non-medicinal alternative for Condyline solution is to have the warts physically removed. This is often only used in more severe cases when all medicinal options have been exhausted. You will have to speak to your GP for further information.
The other alternatives for treating genital warts are Warticon cream and Aldara cream – prescription-only topical treatments also stocked by The Independent Pharmacy. How to use Condyline
Condyline solution is easy to use. For further instructions on how to use Condyline, read the Patient Information Leaflet enclosed with the medicine.
Follow the instructions below that advises how to use Condyline:
- Wash the affected areas with soap and water, and ensure they are dry before using the Condyline solution
- Wash and dry your hands
- Fill the applicator with the Condyline solution, and carefully apply it to a cluster of warts
- Leave this to dry, then repeat for all other warts
- Do not exceed 50 drops or ‘dips’ of solution
- Take care not to put the solution on healthy skin — if you accidentally do this, wash well with soap and water. If you are worried about this, you can always apply a protective layer of Vaseline to the healthy skin surrounding the warts
- Wash your hands thoroughly after using the Condyline solution
- Remember to replace the top firmly on the treatment bottle after each use
Condyline should be applied twice per day, with a 12-hour gap between applications. If for any reason you miss a treatment, apply it as soon as possible. However, if it is nearly time for the next application, skip the treatment that you missed and proceed as normal.
You will likely be prescribed Condyline for three days initially. If your warts persist, you may be advised to repeat the three-day routine the following week. If necessary, this can be extended to four or five weeks (maximum).
It is important to continue the treatment as prescribed, even if your warts do clear. This will reduce your risk of the infection recurring in the future.
Condyline cutaneous solution should only be used as an external treatment – do not apply it to any soft mucous membrane tissue such as the anus or vagina. Take special care to avoid contact with the eyes, nostrils or lips.

Condyline side effects
Condyline solution is considered safe to use if you follow the directions, and serious side effects are rare. Most people who use Condyline to treat genital warts will have a very positive experience with this treatment, and will only encounter mild side effects - (if any at all).

Condyline warnings
Reading the following warnings carefully will help to ensure you are selecting an appropriate product.
Condyline is unsuitable for you if:
- You are allergic to podophyllotoxin or any of the inactive ingredients
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding
- You are using other products which contain podophyllin
- You have recently had an operation and still have open wounds near the affected area
Do not apply Condyline to healthy skin, or to skin that is inflamed or bleeding.
You should only use Condyline on the anus under medical supervision.
Take care if your warts cover an area bigger than 4cm x 4cm. Using Condyline on large areas for an extended amount of time will increase the risk of side effects on the rest of the body. This risk is also increased by using Condyline on skin or membranes that are fragile or bleeding.
Take special care to avoid contact with the eyes, nostrils or lips.
Condyline contains alcohol and is, therefore, flammable.

Condyline is a medication that contains the active ingredient podophyllotoxin in a strength of 0.5%. It is a liquid available in a 3.5ml bottle and comes with a supply of plastic applicator sticks.
Condyline was one of the earliest medications to be approved for the treatment of genital warts, an infection common among sexually active men and women. While the infection doesn’t pose life threatening complications, its symptoms are painful and highly contagious. Condyline uses podophyllotoxin as its active ingredient, a medication that is extracted from the roots of the Podophyllum plant, of Indian origin. Though the genital warts infection is most common among young, sexually active adults, older people can also contract the disease. Condyline has proven to be an effective treatment in those cases, too.

In some situations, the Condyline solution should be used with caution or not at all, for example, in patients who have warts over 4cm in diameter. If Condyline isn’t appropriate for you, talk to your doctor about other treatment options.
Tell your GP if you are taking any other medications, either over-the-counter or prescribed. The Condyline solution is unsuitable if you are allergic to podophyllotoxin, or any of the other ingredients.
The symptoms of genital warts that appear externally are the most contagious. In more than 60% of cases, these external outbreaks transfer the disease to another person in a single unprotected sexual contact. Condyline is easy to apply on these external symptoms and controls their contagiousness within the first three days of application. With proper administration, this solution can clear the symptoms of genital warts within 4 weeks. It makes hazardous surgical methods like cryotherapy and electrocautery unnecessary and allows patients to control the treatment process.
Men and women over 18 years of age my use Condyline but will need to be advised by an expert. Children and people under 18 are not permitted to use this solution. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding are also ineligible as are people with allergies to podophyllotoxin.
