What are Gaviscon Tablets?
Gaviscon Chewable Tablets are suitable for children and adults over the age of 12 years to treat symptoms of heartburn and indigestion and are available in a tasty peppermint flavour.
Each tablet contains 3 ingredients that work together to instantly neutralise the stomach acid and to keep it in the stomach where it belongs, protecting you from further pain and irritation.

Gaviscon tablets provide effective symptomatic relief from the pain and discomfort caused by indigestion and heartburn.
Indigestion and heartburn can affect anyone and most commonly occur after eating. Indigestion can cause you to feel pain and discomfort in your upper abdomen that may be accompanied by feeling bloated, sick or having excess wind.
Heartburn or acid reflux can also be a symptom of indigestion that results in a burning pain in the chest caused by stomach acid coming up into the food pipe.

How do Gaviscon Tablets work?
Gaviscon Chewable Tablets contain 3 active ingredients, Sodium Alginate, Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate and Calcium Carbonate. These ingredients work together to protect and prevent unpleasant symptoms of indigestion or heartburn. They quickly reduce the pH of stomach acid and also form a protective layer in the stomach to prevent its contents moving up into the food pipe.
How to use Gaviscon Tablets
- Gaviscon is for oral use only for children and adults over the age of 12 years.
- Chew each tablet thoroughly before swallowing.
- Chew 2 - 4 tablets when symptoms occur after meals and before bedtime.
If you still are experiencing symptoms of indigestion or heartburn after 7 days of use you should speak to a doctor for advice.
Gaviscon Tablets ingredients
The active ingredients included in each tablet are: sodium alginate 250 mg, sodium hydrogen carbonate 133.5 mg and calcium carbonate 80 mg.
The other ingredients are: Mannitol (E421), macrogol 20000, copovidone, aspartame (E951), peppermint flavouring, magnesium stearate, acesulfame potassium.
Gaviscon Tablets side effects
It is very rare for people to develop side effects when using Gaviscon. However, if you develop symptoms of an allergic reaction whilst using this product, including facial swelling or difficulty breathing, you should seek immediate medical attention.
Gaviscon Tablets Warnings
- Do not take Gaviscon Tablets within 2 hours of any other oral medication as this can interfere with the action of some medicines.
- This medicine contains both sodium and calcium. If you are on a special diet where these products are restricted or you have kidney or heart disease, speak to a doctor or pharmacist for advice.
Gaviscon Tablets - Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
You can take Gaviscon Tablets while pregnant or breastfeeding but you should take the minimum dose for the shortest length of time to manage your symptoms.
